How to make a perfect resume

Hey Everyone! Welcome!

Today I am going to discuss the most important thing for getting jobs that is Resume shortlisting.

Why I am saying this is most important because If we apply for a job then there is a 90% possibility that our resumes will not get shortlisted and I know everyone has faced this even me also. And what is salt in the wound here is that our resumes are not only rejected by HRs but bots also. Yeah, you heard right even bots are rejecting our resumes.

So is there any way by which we can get our resumes shortlisted?

Yes, there is, and this what I am going to tell you all in this article. Along with this, I will also discuss some tools through which we can make our resumes and get to know if our resume is in sync with the job for which are applying.


So first we will discuss all the components that are required in our resumes. This is a double-column sample resume that I am using in this article. Okay now moving to components of resume - So First component is very common i.e your names it should be on top and Try to keep all letter in caps.

Now just below that or inside depending upon your format, you can add your contact details i.e your contact number, email address, also you can add here your LinkedIn profile URL, your portfolio website link, and your GitHub profile link but please never include your Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter link.

Now, 2nd component is your work exp section see where people can have different approaches as few people add work exp before the education section and some after it. My suggestion is that if you have a good and relevant work exp then you can add it on 2nd position otherwise in the 3rd position after education. One more thing only adds your internships or jobs under the work exp section, not training or any volunteer work. If you feel that it is imp to then you can include those in your achievement section.

While writing work exp description try to include technology-related terms like if you had created any API or worked on any DB add these tech words as it will act as keyword and highlight these words by making them bold. Also, try to keep your description short and crisp. And one more thing adds jobs in reverse chronological order i.e., your current or most recent job on top, then the previous one below, all the way to the oldest.

In the education section, if you want you can include your percentage or CGPA.

After this, you can include your skills here. The most common query people have in this section is that they know some language or framework but are not that much confident about it so if they should include it or not? See here you can create a subsection named familiar with and in this section, you can include these skills which you know but don’t have that much grip over them. By doing this 2 things will happen first these skills can act as a keyword as if these skills are asked in Job Description (JD) and second at the time of the interview you can tell the interviewer that you are familiar with them but don't have in-depth knowledge.

After skills, you can add your projects section here don’t add all your 5-6 projects instead of this add those 2-3 projects which you feel are complex and are completed in 3-4 months or more. Add only those Projects you have worked on yourself so that you will be able to explain each detail of that project. In the project section, you can also add open-source projects if you had contributed to any. If possible make your projects live by this you can stand out from the crowd and add their links as a hyperlink.

Now the last section is the achievement section here you can add your ratings of CodeChef, code forces, gfg, leetcode, etc. Also, try to add precise value like if you have achieved 150 rank out of 15,000 students then mention it instead of writing secured good rank because from person to person meaning of good rank can differ. Here you can also add if you have participated in any hackathons and have achieved some good rank or position in that.

Some general info that you should keep in mind while making a resume is that font size should be 11 or 12, Keep a margin of 1/2 to 1 inch, try to use simple and readable fonts like Times New Roman or Ariel. The colors used in the resume should be dark like dark blue, black so that it is easily visible.

Use bullet pts instead of paragraphs. Try to add keywords from the job description to your resume. Export your resumes in pdf format so that formatting doesn’t change if your HR views them on the phone or any other device.

Now coming to the Don't

  • Never include non-tech details like your hobbies in your Tech-related resume.

  • Don't make generalize resumes try to make resumes in sync with the job descriptions.

  • Don't add strengths and weaknesses in the resume if the interviewer wants to know he/she will ask at the time of the interview.

  • You can skip the career objective section because we all know that everyone just copy-pastes it from the internet.

  • Never add your marital status, photos, or DOB in your resume try to keep your resume professional.

  • I have seen that many people add certification sections this is not at all required instead of this you can add skills and projects that you have learned from that course.

  • Never ever include any false information because your interviewer is smarter than you and can catch it very easily.

  • Always keep your resume of 1 page only because if people having 4-5 yr of experience are keeping it at 1 page then you can also make a 1-page resume.

Now let’s talk about some tools that can help you in making resumes.

Make your resume using LaTeX editors like OverLeaf or Resume Maker as they provide a defined template. I will put the link to these in the resources section you can check out there.
